Focusing on rapid, safe and efficient refuelling

With more than 100,000 flights taking off each day around the globe, airports must have exactly the right amount and type of fuel available on site, to cater not only for planned flights, but also for any unexpected fuel requirements resulting from diversions due to mechanical issues, passenger illnesses or bad weather.

Time spent on the tarmac could be time in the air and given that most refuelling operations are carried out after passengers have disembarked but before new passengers board the plane, the process needs to be rapid, safe and efficient.

Championing change for the better

Until recently, this has been a heavily manual process, which limits the speed and efficiency of refuelling operations. Staff may have to drive back and forth with multiple forms to complete, so the collection of fuel requests and signatures can take as long if not longer than it takes to refuel an aircraft.

To address this, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) set a paper free deadline for 2020, in a drive to increase efficiency and accuracy. Puma Energy is a key member of the IATA, which establishes and publishes industry recognised standards and best practices and procedures, from storage to distribution to the delivery of fuel into planes. We are also an associate member of the Joint Inspection Group (JIG), which monitors refuelling standards, operations and quality control. So we are in a great position to drive real change for the better.

This is why Puma Energy launched its eAviation solution – an industry-first digital system that handles the aviation industry’s uniquely complex refuelling processes more efficiently and accurately.

Driving efficiency through automation

eAviation is a set of best-in-market solutions that implement professional tools, automate and secure processes and enable a real-time 360◦ view of the process - everything from pricing to delivery tickets and invoicing. One of the biggest benefits of eAviation is the use of mobile tablets at airports across Africa to capture the details of fuelling, allowing for increased automation in this sector.

There are now 427 specially trained individuals accessing the eAviation solution on tablets at key airports such as Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in Botswana and Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Puerto Rico, significantly reducing the manual processing of fuel delivery tickets. On average, the airports using the technology have now managed to achieve 96% automation in their refuelling processes.

Delivering wider benefits

The solution has also driven wider business benefits, including an overall reduction of manual processes throughout the refuelling value chain. This in turn has reduced delays and errors, saving hundreds of man hours of administration, dramatically improving efficiency and reducing ‘dead-time’ for aircraft on the ground, which no longer have to be kept standing awaiting refuelling while paperwork is carried out by ground staff. In addition, by digitising processes, airlines are better able to manage fraud, focus on value adding tasks and meet the IATA’s zero paper deadline of 2020.
