At Puma Bitumen, we lead the way in high-performance binder innovation — delivering solutions that outperform conventional materials, solve complex engineering challenges, and support the industry’s transition to more sustainable infrastructure.

Our award-winning technologies are trusted across major infrastructure projects and are backed by rigorous research, real-world trial data, and international collaboration. Whether it’s extending pavement life, reducing carbon impact, or increasing chip retention under stress, our specialty binders represent the next generation of performance.

EME2

Optimised for Deep-Lift, Long-Life Pavement Structures

EME2 (Enrobé à Module Élevé Class 2) is a high-modulus binder specifically designed for use in deep-lift structural asphalt layers. Originating in France and now adopted in Australia under Austroads and TMR specifications, EME2 enables thinner, stronger pavements capable of handling high traffic and loading.

By significantly increasing asphalt stiffness, EME2 allows pavement thickness reductions of approximately 25–33%, delivering long-term cost savings without compromising structural integrity.

EME2 mixes are produced with a high binder content (around 6%), providing excellent rut resistance and stability. Due to their increased stiffness and brittleness, EME2 binders are used exclusively in base or sub-base layers, where tensile strains are low and fatigue is not the controlling design factor.

Key Features of EME2:

  • 📏 Reduces pavement thickness by 25–33% compared to conventional asphalt

  • 🔩 High modulus for superior stiffness and structural support

  • 🚛 Exceptional rut resistance, ideal for heavy traffic and freight routes

  • 🧱 Used only in structural layers (not surfacing) due to its brittle nature

  • 🧪 Designed for high binder content (~6%) in accordance with Austroads mix design protocols

EME2 is a specialised solution for projects seeking efficient structural design, especially where long-haul traffic, freight demands, or axle loading make deformation resistance a priority.
