Puma Energy’s Bitumen team in Australia recently received the 2025 IPWEA Queensland Project Innovation Award for its project in Ferny Hills, which marked Australia’s first use of net-zero bitumen.
The award recognizes outstanding contributions made to the Public Works and Engineering Sector in Queensland, Australia.
For project, the team developed a new variation of CarbonBind® (M1000) to meet a local customer’s ambitious sustainability goals. Manufactured at the Bulwer terminal, the binder underwent rigorous testing to successfully meet strict AS2008 specifications.
Key results from the project:
- Reduced CO₂ emissions by 592.5 kg per tonne and saved 20,000 kg CO₂ overall
- No extra testing, delays, or equipment adjustments are needed to use it
- Proved net-zero bitumen can be viable at scale
The award marks continued recognition for Puma Bitumen’s CarbonBind® technology — a leading biogenic bitumen component, developed through rigorous R&D. When added to bitumen, CarbonBind® introduces a negative carbon component to conventional binder grades, while maintaining quality and technical performance.
By incorporating renewable components that absorb CO₂ as they grow, CarbonBind® locks this carbon into the pavement permanently, preventing it from being released back into the atmosphere.
