Cutback Bitumen

Versatile Primer Binders for Spray Sealing & Surface Preparation

Cutback bitumen is a fluid binder made by blending penetration-grade bitumen with a volatile solvent (typically kerosene or naphtha) to reduce its viscosity and allow for easier application at lower temperatures. It is primarily used in spray sealing works as a primer or primer binder to prepare surfaces before the application of a seal or asphalt layer.

Cutbacks are widely used across Australia and internationally for initial pavement sealing, cold or damp conditions, and base course preparation where traditional bitumen application is difficult. They are regulated under AS2157 and can also relate to binders described in AS3568 and AS2008 depending on the application.

How Does Cutback Bitumen Work?

Cutback bitumen is used in spray sealing applications where traditional bitumen is too viscous to apply directly or where surface preparation is critical. It is most commonly applied in three ways:

🔹 Priming (Prime Seal)

Used to penetrate and waterproof unsealed granular pavements before sealing. A low-viscosity cutback (like AMC00 or AMC1) is sprayed to create a bond between the basecourse and the future seal layer. It prepares the surface by stabilising dust, reducing absorption, and ensuring better adhesion of subsequent bitumen.

🔹 Primer Sealing (Primer Seal)

A one-pass treatment that combines a cutback bitumen (usually AMC2 to AMC4) with a single application of aggregate. It acts as a temporary wearing surface, typically on light-traffic roads or as an interim seal before a final seal is applied. Primer seals are often used in remote areas or staged construction.

🔹 Spray Sealing with Cutter (Light Cutback Addition)

In cooler temperatures or when working with aged surfaces, a small proportion of cutter (kerosene or light oil) may be added to standard bitumen to improve sprayability and adhesion. This reduces the binder’s initial viscosity and ensures better wetting and stone retention under marginal conditions.

Supplying Trusted AMC Grades Across Australia and Globally

Puma Bitumen supplies a full suite of AMC-grade cutback bitumen products, tailored to meet the needs of priming, primer sealing, and specialised spray sealing across a variety of road conditions and climates. All products conform to AS 2157, ensuring reliable performance and consistency on site.

We offer:

  • AMC00 – A very low viscosity grade designed for Tightly bonded, Stabilised pavements or Concrete surfaces.

  • AMC0 – A low viscosity primer for medium porosity pavements.
  • AMC1 – A primer suitable for high porosity pavements.

  • AMC2 – A low viscosity primer binder used in Primer Seals.

  • AMC3 – A Primerseal ideal for lightly trafficked tightly bonded pavements in cool and/or damp conditions.

  • AMC4 – Designed for tightly bonded or medium porosity type pavements.

  • AMC5 – A Primer Seal for porous type pavements in warm and/or dry conditions.

  • AMC6 – A lower viscosity spray sealing blend for colder conditions.

  • AMC7 – The highest viscosity grade in the AMC range, AMC7 is commonly used for most sealing operations where risk temperature or performance may need to be improved
