14 October 2024 – Puma Bitumen today announced it will cease production out of its Altona terminal in Victoria from 1 March 2025.
The Altona site is home to Puma’s R&D facility and will continue to serve as the company’s Global Technical Centre of Excellence. Production and supply at the Altona terminal will be redirected through Puma Bitumen’s other five Australian terminal assets.
Altona’s operational and commercial model is heavily reliant on specific market factors to remain viable. Its lack of access to an import terminal makes the site particularly sensitive to market conditions.
Puma Bitumen Australia General Manager Phil Chirnside said the move would realign the company’s operations across Australia as market conditions change and that the company remains committed to its Bitumen business.
“The decision to end localised Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) production at Altona reflects our growth and investment strategy and brings new opportunities for our business in light of current market conditions,” Chirnside said. “Closing production at Altona is reflective of our commitment to creating sustainable solutions for our business and our customers in Australia by allowing us to turn our focus to the next phase of our growth and invest in assets that represent the true value we continue to bring to the Australian road construction industry.”
“We’re confident in our ability to remain agile through times of change, and this is evident in the strength of our supply footprint which remains stronger than ever.”
The Altona terminal was decommissioned by BP in 2013 and brought back online by Puma Energy for low-volume PMB production in 2017.
