Puma Energy expands Be Road Safe programme to reach more than 77,000 children

In sub-Saharan Africa, traffic accidents are among the leading cause of death of young people. According to the World Health Organization, road traffic accidents caused an estimated 225,482 deaths in 2021 in Africa.  Young people are among the most vulnerable to road traffic accidents. Puma Energy’s BeRoadSafe programme aims to improve the safety of African children on the roads today, and to prepare them to be responsible road users in the future.

The programme is a partnership between Puma Energy and NGO Amend with the support of local partners, including, Ministries of Education, Safety Councils and the Police in the respective countries. Through our BeRoadSafe programme we have reached more than 38,000 children across 20 schools in Botswana, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

This year we are focusing on maintaining engagement with schools and stakeholders and expanding the activities in Botswana, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, and also kick-starting new activities in South Africa.

The program is focused on primary schools at which children are at high risk of being injured on the roads and includes:

  • A standard set of activities, including Road safety education; road safety drawing competition and prize ceremony;
  • Be Road Safe Africa clubs, where student ambassadors are trained to deliver peer education; and
  • Kid’s Court, which empowers children, holds adults accountable and saves lives as children are trained to be Road Safety Judges ceremony.

We look forward to expanding this program across more locations in the future and thank our partners for helping children and communities to BeRoadSafe.
