High-performance pavements require high-performance binders.

Asphalt pavements face significant stress,  from axle loads and braking at intersections to heat cycling and moisture ingress. Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) enhances conventional bitumen by introducing advanced polymers that improve flexibility, durability, and resilience under real-world loading and climate conditions.

🔬 PMB Modification Types

We tailor our PMB formulations using a range of proven and emerging modifiers to suit performance needs and regional specifications:

1. Elastomers (e.g. SBS – Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene)

Elastomeric PMBs provide elastic recovery, allowing pavements to flex under load and return to shape. This reduces cracking and fatigue. SBS is widely used in both Austroads A-Class PMBs and global PG-grade binders.

Ideal for: High-volume roads, intersections, bridge decks

2. Plastomers (e.g. EVA – Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate)

Plastomers improve stiffness and deformation resistance, particularly at high temperatures. EVA-modified binders are excellent for rut resistance but less elastic than SBS.

Ideal for: Hot climates, urban arterial roads, industrial yards

3. Crumb Rubber (CRM)

Produced from recycled tyres, crumb rubber modification delivers enhanced elasticity, improved skid resistance, and contributes to sustainability goals. Our Olexocrumb binder incorporates CRM for both structural and environmental benefits.

Ideal for: Regional roads, surfaces requiring enhanced grip

4. Innovative Polymers & Blends

Our R&D team continuously explores next-generation polymers including reactive elastomeric terpolymers (RETs), recycled plastics, and bio-based modifiers that enhance performance while reducing environmental impact. Ideal for: High-tech, green-certified, or pilot infrastructure projects

Puma Bitumen’s PMBs for asphalt are validated in lab and field conditions across Australia and global markets, including Austroads compliance testing (ATS 3110), EN 14023 certification, and PG grading.
